Each month Jivamukti Yoga has a special Focus of the Month, which is reflected in our yoga classes. Ever changing new inspirations help to change your perspective on the way of Yoga so you can come to new conclusions on your yoga practice.

▲▼ THE CURRENT FOCUS OF THE MONTH IN ENGLISH:

oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ tatsaviturvareṇyaṃ bhargo devasyadhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayāt

– Gayatri Mantra, Interpretation by Manorama D’Alvia

Earth Space Heavens. We meditate on the Divine light of the radiant source. May that inspire our hearts and thoughts.

In an essay posted on audubon.com entitled ‘What Do Birds Do For Us’, Barry Yeoman writes about a tree in the American Northwest called the white bark pine, that both humans and other animals have come to rely on.

Its large seeds feed grizzlies and black bears. The tree community provides a habitat for deer, elk and large birds. The white bark pine tree grows all the way up to the tree line, so they are effective at protecting drinking water supplies. The mountains they grow on are essentially water towers – equivalent to the water towers we see on the roofs of buildings in NYC. The tree’s roots hold the soil in place, preventing erosion, preventing avalanches; the roots of the tree are what stop the mountains from crumbling to pieces. The shade of the canopy slows down the spring snowmelt, preventing flooding from occurring.

Only one bird disperses the white bark pine tree’s seeds! One! This bird is called the Clark’s Nutcracker – a black and white winged cousin to the crow. The nutcracker has a long beak that it can use to open up the pinecones to reach its seeds. The bird either eats the seeds or stores them in the back of their throats. It then replants them, at the exact location (!) and depth (!) for the tree to reproduce.

To recap: Mountains = water towers, Trees = prevention of avalanche and flooding, protect drinking water, provide shelter & food, Birds = reproduction of trees, stops the world from ending, and Humans = benefit from all this magic, cause unnecessary destruction

So what would happen if this one bird, the Clark’s Nutcracker, disappeared? The trees would disappear; natural disasters prevail.

This is just one example of how everything on this earth is inter-connected and inter-dependent on each other. In a lecture, Alan Watts explains the idea of how everything on the planet – humans, flowers, weeds, birds, bees; EVERYTHING – only exists because everything around it also exists. Flowers only exist because of bees, and bees only exist because of flowers.

The rainforests of South America exist because of dust storms in Africa. The temperate climate of the American Northeast exists because of the rainforest in South America, and so on and so on.

Unfortunately, as humans, we need reminders to see the big picture. Most of us only see what’s right in front of us. We don’t see the connection between tiny little bees and the fact that they pollinate 70% of the global food source. We don’t see the connection between the fruit and vegetables in the supermarket and all of the human and animal labor that brought them there: farmers, pollinators, harvesters, bundlers, truckers, etc. We don’t see the connection between Earth, Space, Heavens.

We don’t see the big picture, so then we say, “I am only one person, how does anything I do make a difference?” Multiply that apathy by the 7.7 billion human population, and we have a big issue.

So with global warming becoming a legitimate, present moment threat, what can we do?

In chapter 3 verse 21 of the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna that a great person leads by example, setting standards that are followed by others all across the world. We’ve explored this verse before, but as Sharon Gannon says, with repetition magic is forced to arise!

Taking action can seem overwhelming at times, but the actions we take can be subtle, you don’t need to force your views on others.

Maybe the person behind you in your local coffee shop sees your reusable coffee mug, in the supermarket they see your reusable shopping bags, in the bodega they see you reach for the tofu wrap, on the park bench they see your reusable utensils. Maybe they go out to get their own reusable stuff, maybe it sparks a conversation. You are playing your part, and saving the planet spreads like wildflowers.

The āsana practice can also teach us about the inter-connectedness of it all. The alignment of Tāḍāsana / ”Mountain Seat” exists within every single other āsana we come into during class. (See Teaching Tips) All the āsanas have the same physical alignment, they are just shaped different. Similarly, everything on this planet, living and inanimate, are made of the same elements, we are just shaped different.

The mountain, or let’s say Earth, is also the connection between all of the other forms we come into. We come into the form of humans – warriors and sages and saints, of animals – dogs, monkeys, birds, frogs, fish, insects. We come into the form of flowers and trees. We come into the form of tools – compasses, plows, boats. The mountain (Earth) is the common factor. Everything on this planet, even what we think of as inanimate objects, comes from this earth.

The practices of yoga – physical, spiritual and philosophical – teach us how to relate and connect to everyone and everything around us in a meaningful and supportive way.

Tāḍāsana / ”Mountain Seat” is also sometimes called Samasthiti / “Equal Standing”. The alignment of the āsana is equally balanced – front/back, side/side, top/bottom – but also, we are on equal standing with the Earth.

This Earth takes care of us – offers us food, water, shelter, a way of life, but we should take care of her just as much.

sthira-sukham-āsanam (PYS 2.46) The connection to the Earth should be steady and joyful.

▲▼ ABOUT LARUGA

Since a young age, Laruga has been fascinated with mind/body connections and spiritual philosophy which later attracted her to the practice of yoga in early 1996 after a sincere connection and study of yoga philosophy. It wasnʼt until she stumbled upon Ashtanga Yoga when she fully immersed herself into a devoted practice a few years later in 1998.

Since then, she has continued to draw inspiration from her daily visit to the mat, along with long term studies with her teachers, the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and now his grandson R. Sharath Jois, of Mysore India. An advanced-level practitioner and student of yoga, as well as a Level 2 Authorized Teacher from KPJAYI of Mysore, India, Laruga entered into teaching after many years of sustained practice and brings with her over 20 years total experience instructing body movement. In turn, she is dedicated to teaching the method of Ashtanga yoga to its fullest capacity, cultivating transparency to the tradition, and the deeply rich lineage the practice originates, otherwise known as parampara.

Through it all, Laruga teaches as an act of deep sharing and love for what yoga develops in each individual; facilitating space to open, challenge, and inspire those to step into the center of their own being, and experience their inherent potential.

Currently Laruga heads the Mysore program at Yogayama in Stockholm, Sweden and teaches workshops and retreats internationally.

▲▼ WHICH PROGRAM CAN YOU EXPECT?

TUESDAY - FRIDAY 14 - 17 May 2019: 07:00-10:00 Morning Mysore Class (assisted by Elinore)

FRIDAY 17 May: 17:00-19:00 Led Primary Series with Q&A

SATURDAY 18 May: 10:30-13:00 Vinyasa Integration

In this workshop, special attention will be focused on moving with conscious awareness, in union with conscious breath, otherwise known as vinyāsa. Troubleshooting areas of instability that may be present, you will delve more thoroughly into how to build strength, with care and attention, building upon internal alignment. Focused points of attention will include practical application of Tristhānam (posture, breath, gaze) into each movement, promoting a calm center and accessing sense withdrawal, known as pratyāhāra. Learn to activate and open the energy channels of the body without strain. Discover balance, support, and integrity in strength-based postures such as techniques for jumping back and jumping through as well as the structural breakdown of challenging poses and transitions.

14:00-16:30 The Gateway Poses of Primary Series

All postures in the sequences of Ashtanga yoga are important. However, in this workshop, we will take a closer look at the core postures in the Primary series that are integral to opening and strengthening the body-mind to set the stage and foundation to more intelligently grow and evolve in the practice.

SUNDAY 19 May: 11:00-13:30 Backbending with Ease: Liberate the Spine

The paradox of backbending is that we must be firm and soft at the same time, uniting the energy of strength and surrender. Learn the basic components of backbending with integrity to the natural flow of the body. In addition, learn to understand the concept of active release. When actively releasing, we experience the use of grounding mechanisms to establish the downward flow of energy while fully utilizing the breath to then be able to expand and deepen the release. In this workshop learn the foundational techniques that allow the body to find its depth and strength while at the same time letting go. Open to all levels.

14:15-16:45 Intermediate Series Introduction

Nādī Śhodana

Intermediate Series, otherwise known as nādī śhodana, meaning nervous system cleansing, builds upon the culmination of energy and purification within the practitioner built from the foundation of Primary Series. With deeper backbends and forward bends as well as arm balances, the Intermediate series integrates the use of opposing forces to garner greater unity and strength, both mental and physical, opening the internal light of awareness within each individual. Whether new to the practice of Intermediate Series, or an experienced practitioner, this workshop will invoke new insights and inspire your already existing practice.

THE ISLAND: “Italy without Sicily leaves no image. Sicily is the key to everything.“ - Johann Wolfgang Goethe - A Trip to Sicily

▲▼ GENERAL INFO ON THE YOGA PROGRAM & OTHER ACTIVITIES

THE THEME: As the Summer Solstice on June 21 is the astronomical marker of the height of the year, symbolically it represents the fullness of life and light. Yoga is a celebration of the Sun, the supreme consciousness that illuminates all things and makes them clear. We will deepen our practice by honoring the light and connecting to the powerful energy of the time. The same solar energy that brings seeds forth, can ripen our highest intentions into manifestation. In this celebration of life-giving fire and light, our goal is to give participants the opportunity to burn away any burdens, immerse themselves in the dynamic vastness of nature, to eat vibrant and nourishing food, and to enjoy the company of uplifting community with our Jivamukti Yoga community.

THE PROGRAM: Anja will lead a morning 3-hour asana practice, prededed by optional morning meditation, chanting, and scripture reading. These will be intensive “workshop style” classes focused around the theme of warmth, light, and abundance, preparing you for the culmination of this retreat, the summer solstice on Friday, June 21st. Anja will infuse her many years of experience from teacheing international Jivamukti Yoga retreats and Jivamukti Teacher Trainings to offer a distilled vision of the purpose of the practice. You will experience and explore different aspects of Jivamukti Yoga like asanas, kriyas, pranayama, and yogic scriptures. Each afternoon we will offer shorter asana sessions, led by one of our members of the Jivamukti Berlin teaching faculty. Afternoons will also be filled with trips to the sea, swimming in the pool, and lounging in the sun.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE LOCATION

THE LOCATION: Cloistered away upon a lonely hill in southeast Sicily between the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ragusa Ibla and the popular summer beach destination of Marina di Ragusa , our historic 17th century Sicilian Masseria is an oasis with lush gardens, vast patios, beautifully restored rooms, and a grand swimming pool. The entire complex is enclosed by restored ancient stone walls, featuring within them the central courtyard, the ancient villa, and surrounding suites. Situated only 10 minutes away from the Mediterranean Sea and close to a small town for shopping and exploring, the Villa is surrounded by a serene natural park with centuries-old olive, carob and almond trees, embodying the quintessential Sicilian countryside with all its historical hand cut stone masonry, pre-Christian caves, breathtaking views and hills leading to sandy beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. During the peak of the year, experience coming to full flourishing with the Scilian hills as they abound with green and vibrance.

Our Masseria grounds and a brief history of the ancient Sicilian knowledge of mathematics and astronomy

The 17th century villa that we will be exclusively having as our retreat headquarters was designed to align with the sun, featuring the summer solstice sunrise at an approximate azimuth of 54 degrees and sunset at approximate azimuth of 305 degrees. The front of the house features a round holed stone window paired with an identical feature in the back of the house. These were constructed in such a mathematically precise fashion as to capture the intense sun on the solstice. The villa was built around these markers, and means that the sun will perfectly intersect and be directly over the grounds during the solstice. We should not consider these holed stones as a precise calendars or an instruments to observe the sun’s cycle, but rather monuments that provided information on the solstices for practical and agricultural purposes. The summer solstice is often considered to be a celebration of Apollo and the upcoming harvest. Thus it is a time of light, fullness, power, and abundance.

It is fascinating to discover how our ancestors already thousands of years ago, were able to apply precise astronomical canons to their constructions and living quarters. They would plan the axis of their living quarters at the moment of the laying of the foundation. They would divide the arch of the daily itinerary of the sun through projecting on the ground the shade of the sun itself on a fixed pole in the style of the ancient meridian clocks. In Sicily, the sun was an object of veneration and people felt always in a position of inferiority to the Sun and all its related and inexplicable events. At the center of their lives was the Sun, the Morning star that dictated the rhythm of nature and conditioned their everyday life. It was certainly a reason of great anxiety for Sicilian people at the start of winter to see the Sun getting lower and lower on the horizon while the daylight would diminish and the dark night extend its duration. At one point the Sun seemed to fall into darkness and the fear that it might not come back was always a tragic experience that seemed to threaten life itself. With time, Sicilians noticed that on the occasion of the winter solstice the Sun would always regain its strength as an invisible force over darkness which they celebrated with rituals starting fires symbolizing their effort to give heat and light to the weakened Sun. The celebration of the returning sun continued until it reaches its pinnacle in June, where fires are burnt and the fullness of the cycle is embraced. To understand the level of mathematical and existential knowledge in the old days we need simply to look into the life and writings of some of the Sicilian people of the time. Especially to Pythagoras who founded a school on Sicily, in which initiates were sworn to secrecy and lived a communal, ascetic lifestyle. This lifestyle entailed a number of dietary prohibitions, traditionally said to have included vegetarianism, although modern scholars doubt that he ever advocated for complete vegetarianism.

The teaching most securely identified with Pythagoras is metempsychosis, or the "transmigration of souls", which holds that every soul is immortal and, upon death, enters into a new body. He may have also devised the doctrine of musica universalis, which holds that the planets move according to mathematical equations and thus resonate to produce an inaudible symphony of music. Pythagoras was credited with many mathematical and scientific discoveries, including the Pythagorean theorem, Pythagorean tuning, the five regular solids, the Theory of Proportions, the sphericity of the Earth, and the identity of the morning and evening stars as the planet Venus. In addition, to the astronomical markings, the Masseria features its own small cave cemetery or necropolis located to the west of the Villa itself in the Egyptian tradition of building cemetery and pyramids west of the village / living quarters. This cave is visible on the immediate north side of the hill halfway along the main driveway and it is aligned with the winter solstice sunrise.

"MEET THE INNOVATORS...SHARON GANNON AND DAVID LIFE" (Yoga Journal, USA)
Jivamukti Yoga founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life, is one of the fastest growing and most highly regarded modern approaches to the ancient art of yoga. Sharon Gannon together with David Life have certified hundreds of students to teach the Jivamukti method through the intense one month residential 300 hour Teacher Training course which is offered each year in the US, Costa Rica and/or Europe/India. With their Yoga DVDs and the books "Jivamukti Yoga" (also translated into German, Russian & Italian), "The Art of Yoga", "Yoga and Vegetarianism", "Cats and Dogs are People, too!", "Simple Recipes for Joy", Sharon and David are changing the way that people view spirituality, life, themselves, each other, animals and the environment.

Sharon Gannon David LifeSHARON GANNON started her quest for liberation upon her birth on July 4th in Washington, DC. Sharon views art as a means for uplifting the soul and her artistic pursuits enriched the community by educating and inspiring. In 1984 she shifted her main focus from the performing arts to teaching yoga in the hope of giving practical methods that would benefit people more directly and immediately. Sharon has studied yoga since 1976 with many teachers around the globe, most notably with Shri Brahmananda Saraswati, Swami Nirmalanada, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, Swami Shankarananda, Shyam Das and Bhagavan Das. She brings a rare blend of scholarly study, artistic pursuits and a highly disciplined asana and meditation practice to her offerings as a teacher.

DAVID LIFE: Bios are hard for me to digest. The idea that a picture could be painted of me with some little list of factoids is untenable. The only thing that gives me credibility as a yoga teacher is the graceful association with my teachers. Sometimes I like to read bios because it tells me things about a person that I didn't know and to that end, here is a list of all the significant jobs that have come my way over the past 60 years, in order: Lawnmowing and snowshoveling, Paper delivery, Beer and Wine store stockboy, Forklift driver in Corrugated box company, Phone order taker, Dishwasher, Cafeteria manager, Welder in Steel Mill Apartment building super, Silk screen production and designer, Graphic designer, Illustrator, Artist, Poet, Life Cafe owner, Yoga teacher, Bio writer!

Anja KühnelANJA KÜHNEL has been a devoted student of Sharon Gannon and David Life since she first met them while temporarily living in New York. She has been directing the two Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Centers and their Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training program since 2008. After 15 years of study with Sharon and David, Anja is more than grateful for all she has learned and all that she is still going to learn. Anja has been practicing yoga with teachers of various yoga styles and has traveled the world to do so. But in her heart, Anja knew immediately after her first Jivamukti class, that it was where she belonged. She teaches at her two Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Centers, is regularly invited as a guest teacher worldwide and leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training Program in Berlin. She has also been a regularly invited to mentor and facilitator at the international Jivamukti Teacher Trainings.

Everyone is talking about Sharon & David's Jivamukti Yoga method….
“Sharon Gannon und David Life who founded their own yoga method called Jivamukti Yoga in the late 80ies and, with it, made Yoga for the first time ever socially acceptable for western urban dwellers. Among their students are Sting, Madonna, Christy Turlington and basically all other non-overweight famous american actors and musicians. Many speak about them as Gurus. With their mixture of old Indian tradition and modern lifestyle like rock music they were the ones who were majorly responsible for the Yoga boom, which from New York has long spilled over to Germany: Three million Germans are said to regularly practice Yoga these days ... in Berlin-Mitte it appear to be two million alone.'
--Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Germany
"David Life looks like Iggy Pop, is widely tatooed, has an incredible power in his stringy tiny arms and the great luck to have a woman on his side who has a delphine blue streak in her black hair and who is radiating a mild wisdom that makes one want to start crying immediately as soon as she opens her mouth. With their headsets, the two contrive to get every hall to boil.... – Oh My Guru!"
--DIE WELT, Germany
“..holistic vision extending to strict vegetarianism and hard-core animal rights activism'
--Vanity Fair USA
“David and Sharon have inspired and encouraged us to think of yoga not just as a system of exercises but also as a door to the infinite.”
--Sting
"It has the full package, more than just exercise. I always learn something at Jivamukti; they really educate the students."
-- Christy Turlington
“Without Sharon and David, yoga in the US would still be the obscure practice of a few devotees.”
--The New York Times, USA
“The pioneers of yoga in the United States, inspire us to appreciate life’s depth and breadth.”
--25, Japan
“Jivamukti Yoga offers the tantalizing promise of not only a well-toned body, but salvation too.”
--Hinduism Today, USA
--Yoga Aktuell, Germany
“Meshing the spiritual and psychological elements of yoga with the physical ones, Jivamukti yoga forces students to confront both their bodily and emotional limitations.”
--Harpers and Queens, UK
“Lean, flexible, vegetarian, poetry writing, theosophist, celestial American yogis…their salutes to the sun are done by the stars.”
--Sunday Morning Post, Hong Kong
"These two pioneers, (Sharon Gannon and David Life) are consummate showmen as well as shamans, injecting yoga with a healthy dose of New York Chutzpah along the way."

--Yoga Journal USA
"Once you make Jivamukti yoga part of your life, you will look different to the world and the world will look different to you"

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE RETREAT LOCATION AND ACCOMODATION

Wild Woodstock Retreat

OUR LOCATION FOR THE YOGA CLASSES AND EVENTS:
Jivamukti Yoga co-founders Sharon Gannon and David Life open part of their home in Woodstock, NY (USA) for this special retreat. Here they have established the magical Wild Woodstock Forest Sanctuary. This space also holds a beautiful intimate yoga shala right next to their house where all yoga classes and events of this retreat will be held.

The Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary is a magical 125-acre landscape established in 2003 and located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains near Woodstock in upstate New York (about 2 hours north of New York City and 3.5 miles from downtown Woodstock).

The Sanctuary serves as a safe haven and unpolluted habitat for diverse plant and animal communities, including white tail deer, black bear, foxes, porcupines, possums, raccoons, turkeys, as well as a large variety of wild birds, fish, snakes and other reptiles and amphibians. In present culture, the word wild is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized," but the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others." The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness—to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully.

Sharon Gannon often teaches that we can have anything we want so long as we are willing to provide it to others first. She and David Life live that teaching by having established and by maintaining the Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary, which is the country ashram for the Jivamukti Yoga School.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

YOUR ACCOMMODATION DURING THIS RETREAT will be provided in handpicked high quality properties/houses in the Woodstock area. All houses are shared (2 to 5 twin/double or single rooms in one property), i.e. you will share a common living area, a fully equipped self-catered kitchen and 1 to 3 bathrooms with up to 4-10 other retreat participants (depending on the size of the house, number of single rooms booked etc.). All properties and rooms are individual with their special treats so it is hard to compare them. We also offer a number of optional upgrades to the standard accommodation to better suit your individual requirements. Check registration form for details.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

BOARD DURING THIS RETREAT: All houses come with well equipment self-catered kitchens and are strictly vegan, i.e. no diary, egg or meat products may be brought into any of the houses.  The idea of this retreat is to also create a Satsang experience by cooking together delicious vegan meals in groups of likeminded vegan yogis. All houses will be equipped with a copy of Sharon Gannon’s cookbook “Simple Recipes for Joy”. For days/nights out, there are also some very nice vegan restaurants in Woodstock.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

BEING WILD, the underlying theme of this first of its kind retreat, in present culture, is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized". But the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others". The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness - to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully. Reaching this state actually requires the oposite of "chaos" and "disorganization": A regular intensive yoga practice, not only asana wise but also by studying the other legs of yoga and having satsang with other like minded yogis and most importantly, your teachers.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

This is why we have designed this one of a kind Jivamukti Yoga Intensive Retreat in Woodstock in order to provide you the opportunity to immerse for up to two weeks in intensive dalily study and practice right from the source with the founders of the Jivamukti Yoga method. Every morning of this retreat, Sharon Gannon and/or David Life will teach a 4 hour intensive Jivamukt Yoga workshop from 10am to 2pm (ca. 3 hour asana practice and ca. 1 hour yoga philosophy teachings). These workshop style morning classes will be complemented by daily 2hour Jivamukti Yoga Open XL classes with Jivamukti Yoga Berlin director Anja Kuehnel and occassionally also other international Jivamukti Yoga teachers in the late afternoon and, occasionally Satsangs, Kirtans and other special events with Sharon Gannon, David Life, Anja Kuehnel and other presenters.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Special Bonus Events: Approximately 1-2 times per week, we hope to offer special events in the late afternoon/evening, such as Satsangs or Kirtans or Yoga Philosophy lectures with Sharon Gannon, David Life and other presenters, which in some cases due to time constraints will be offered INSTEAD of the afternoon Open XL class (i.e. sometimes no Open XL class on special events days). Once during each of the two weeks of this retreat, we invite you to a Karma Yoga session to benefit the Wild Woodstock Forrest Sanctuary area. Exact daily schedule TBA at the retreat venue.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Please note for your planning: On the arrival days there is NO morning class nor Q&A conference with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life, i.e. the first class on your arrival day is the afternoon class with Anja. This also applies if your arrival day is August 18 even though Sharon and David teach on this day in the morning, as this class is only for the people who also booked Part I of the retreat. On August 17 and 25 (final days), there is no evening class with Anja, last class on August 17 and 25 is the morning workshop with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life from 10am-2pm. If you booked both weeks, August 17 in the evening and August 25 in the morning provides a welcome opportunity to take "a day off" and explore Woodstock and its surroundings. For instance, you could visit Ananda Ashram or the Farm Sanctuary. Or go swimming.

As normal with renowned teachers like Sharon Gannon and David Life, the practice space included in this retreat strictly is the size of one regularly sized yoga mat (ca. 0,65x1,8m) only. All practice spots are marked and mats must be placed within the markers. You should bring your own yoga mat as there are only a limited number of rental mats. The yoga room has blankets and straps for your use. It also has a limited number of blocks. If you anticipate using blocks, please bring your own, as we cannot guarantee to have enough for everyone.

Message from Anja

Accept us both together, protect us both together, may our knowledge and strength increase together, may we not resent each other.

Dear ones,

I am thanking all of you for making an effort to create the time and space to be together! We hold precious and dear in our hearts whatever we put our energy into. It is 100% up to us. Life is pulling us in all these different directions. It is wonderful that we are all meeting here at Sharon ji's and David ji's beautiful home and at the sanctuary they have created for the animals, plants and us human people, and that all of us together get the chance to immerse into our practice in this beautiful natural environment which is supporting us on all levels. This year Wild Woodstock will be very special as we beginn on a New Moon and end on a Full Moon. And for me personally, it will the the 11th time in a row that I am coming to Wild Woodstock.

Let us put all of our love into what we do! Let us always remind each other that this is what truly matters in life. To uplift each other, to enjoy each other's company, to learn from each other, to see the beauty in each moment and to be grateful for the gift of life. Putting our prāṇa in what we truly care about: to be as natural and loving as one can possibly be, taking rest in our true nature, to truly be free and to serve with each breath.

May all beings everywhere be happy and free and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

Love.
Anja

▲▼ ABOUT DAVID

About David

David Williams has been practicing yoga daily, without interruption, since 1971.

In 1972, David met K. P. Manju , the son of K. Pattabhi Jois, and saw him demonstrate the Ashtanga Yoga Primary series. This was at Dr. Swami Gitananda's Ananda Ashram in Pondicherry, South India, where David received his Six Month Yoga Teachers Training Course Certification.

In 1973, David began learning Ashtanga Yoga from K. Pattabhi Jois at his home in Mysore, India, and he became the first non-Indian taught the complete Ashtanga Yoga system of asanas and pranayama directly from Jois. In 1974, David became one of the first non-Indians certified to teach the Ashtanga Yoga asanas. He is also one of the few people ever certified by Jois to teach the Ashtanga Yoga pranayama.

In 1975, David introduced K. Pattabhi Jois and Manju Jois to America when he, along with Nancy Gilgoff, organized and sponsored their first visit to Encinitas, California.

David is responsible for teaching the Ashtanga Yoga system to many of today's leading teachers and practitioners, including David Swenson, Danny Paradise, Cliff Barber, Baptiste Marceau, Bryan Kest, Jonny Kest, Clifford Sweatte, Ricky Tran, Kathy Cooper, and Andrew Eppler.

David is 70 years old. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has lived on the island of Maui, Hawaii, since l976.

▲▼ WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT HIS LAST WORKSHOP

What others are saying about his last workshop:

Hi David,

Just thought I'd write to you while the going is good. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and am very happy that I had the experience of sharing yoga with you. For many years now, I have been questioning the way that Ashtanga has been taught and I too have been saddened by the injuries and bad name that Ashtanga has in the yoga community. I started yoga to find freedom in my life and then one day I looked around and realized that I was surrounded by a system that was rigid and full of doctrines and dogmas.

To hear you, the 'legend of Ashtanga yoga,' come out and say that, "if it hurts you are doing it wrong," that "it should feel wonderful," and that "the person who enjoys it the most today is the one most likely to practice tomorrow," was so refreshing and so important.

You have inspired me to practice daily for the rest of my life, to love it, and to get real.

Thanks.

Aloha mate,

Mark

Thanks David for unshackling years and years of self-doubt that certain individuals along the rungs of the "Yoga hierarchy" have bestowed in me because I didn't and wouldn't agree with their dogmas and doctrines (I heard you well and clear Mark). It enabled me to completely change my daily practice and my way of teaching this very art of Yoga with a clear conscience and total freedom. Good on ya.

George

Dear David,

My epiphany... How could so many of us have it wrong? Could it be that we were ALL just taught wrong? We all see the form and the strength and have been taught to focus on the outer alignment. All of the workshops and teachers focus on advancing your postures, not your prana. We are believing that the more advanced postures bring some kind of secret, and try to perfect the posture like we see it. We desire to understand, but keep searching in the wrong place, led by teachers who are doing the same thing. The search never ends because the information is never clear. After over 20 years of workshops, study and practice, I feel like I am also guilty of teaching wrong knowledge. It makes me cry to think that I may have hurt someone by my own ignorance. You not only have lit my candle, but blown my mind to realize that I made it too hard on myself and others. You have given me the missing puzzle pieces and my search is over. I only hope I can convey your message to others.

Happy travels,

Laura

P.S. Jalandara Bandha was never a focus point for me, I never understood it. My neck has been stiff for a year, and it feels better already. Too many injuries later, I thank you!

▲▼ AN OPEN LETTER TO GERMAN YOGA STUDENTS

Greetings and Salutations from Maui!

When I teach Yoga, I am always reminded that there are some major concepts about how Ashtanga Yoga is taught and practiced, based on my personal study, observation, and uninterrupted practice, that I feel are important to share with my classes.

First, and foremost, I hope you can learn from me that in your practice, "If it hurts, you are doing it wrong." Through the years, I have observed that too many people are hurting themselves and hurting others. Yoga practice can be (and should be) pleasant from the beginning to the end. What is important is the mula bandha and deep breathing. With daily practice, it is inevitable that one will become more flexible.

From my own practice and observation, I learned that pushing your current limitations to get into a position could result in injury, which results in one needing to rest the injury to recover so they can resume their practice. This entire sequence of events is not only unpleasant, it is contrary to my belief that through slow, steady, daily practice one can achieve greater flexibility by generating one's own internal heat to relax into positions, rather than being forced into a position. I have observed this slower, steadier method is not only healthier, but it allows one to develop greater flexibility of a more lasting nature, than the kind that is forced. Unfortunately, as many have found, pushing one's current limitations can result in having to severely curtail or limit activity during recovery. This cycle can lead to unpleasant associations with one's Yoga practice, rather than the pleasant experiences I work to instill, and that I feel are necessary for a lifelong practice.

In my workshop, I want to show each of you how you can do the Ashtanga Yoga series in a lifelong practice that is a completely pleasant experience.

I suspect that when you first saw the practice, you said to yourself, "If I did this, it would be great for me!" So, here you are--you have observed the practice, and you want to continue it. The key is being able to continue practicing Yoga for the rest of your life. From over 45 years of observing thousands of people practicing Yoga, I realize that those who continue are the ones who are able to figure out how to make it enjoyable. They look forward to their daily practice and nothing can keep them from finding the time to do it. It becomes one of the most pleasant parts of their day. The others, consciously, subconsciously, or unconsciously, quit practicing. It is my goal to do everything I can to inspire you to establish your Yoga practice, not just for the few days we are together, but for the rest of your life.

Secondly, I hope to share with you my belief that the ultimate goal of Yoga is not to increase flexibility and strength. Increased flexibility and strength are simply the natural results and benefits of daily practice. While additional flexibility and strength are important and apparent benefits of Yoga, I believe the goals of Yoga practice are self-realization and keeping oneself balanced and healthy on a daily basis. Health is your greatest wealth. The body's DNA knows how to heal itself; all it needs is the energy. The energizing, rejuvenating Yoga practices can be the source of this energy.

Lastly, I hope you will find that my workshop is for everyone at all levels. Occasionally I asked if someone is "good at Yoga." I quickly respond that the best Yogi is not the one who is most flexible, but the one who is the most focused on what he or she is doing, the one most intensely doing the mula bandha and deep breathing. It is with some sadness that I have observed people "competing with their Yoga practice." I have also observed others who are discouraged in their practice because they feel this competition and worry that they will never be able to do their practice with the flexibility and skill of others more advanced in the series. My goal is to convey the idea that the greatest Yogi is the one who enjoys his or her Yoga practice the most, not the one who can achieve the ultimate pretzel position. It is my belief, which I hope to convey to you, that in your practice of this moving meditation, what is important, is what is invisible to the observer, what is within each of you.

I believe in the Yoga. I believe that anyone who has the desire can do the Ashtanga practice, perhaps with personal modifications, in a way that is pleasant. For years, I have said, "If someone said to me, 'You have 15 minutes, one hour, etc., do something good for yourself. You can use barbells, bicycles, or whatever,' I would start doing the Ashtanga Yoga Salutations to the Sun and Primary Series." If someone can show me something better, I am ready to learn it. In my more than 45 years of searching, I have learned five or six systems of Yoga practice. For myself, I have not found a better physical, mental, and emotional fitness program than the Ashtanga Yoga system. I hope you will feel the same after our days together.

I look forward to sharing my practice and experience with you.

Yours in Yoga,

David Williams

ANNIKA PFEIFER + TEAM = VEGAN DETOX FOOD

PREISE DETOX RETREAT MASSAGEN: 60min=99 EUR, 30min=63 EUR.

Always made with Love.

Drop-Down -Menü eins weiter oben.

1 ganzen Tag eher kommen also bereits am Donnerstag ab 14:30: +99 EUR

1/2 Tag eher kommen also bereits am Freitag ab 8:00: +45 EUR

1/2 Tag eher länger bleiben also bis Sonntagabend: +45 EUR

Stiftung Warentest).
