JIVAMUKTI YOGA FOCUS OF THE MONTH: STAGES ON THE PATH

Each month Jivamukti Yoga has a special Focus of the Month, which is reflected in our yoga classes. Ever changing new inspirations help to change your perspective on the way of Yoga so you can come to new conclusions on your yoga practice.

▲▼ THE CURRENT FOCUS OF THE MONTH IN ENGLISH:

maitrī-karuṇā-mudita-upekṣāṇāṁsukha-duḥkha-puṇya-apuṇya-viṣayāṇāṁbhāvanātaścitta-prasādanam (PYS 1.33)

To preserve the innate serenity of the mind, a yogin should be happy for those who are happy, be compassionate toward those who are unhappy, be delighted for those who are virtuous, and be indifferent toward the wicked.

Jivamukti Yoga Chant Book, page 14

As we embark on our spiritual journey, we might speculate on what is the final destination, if any, on our path? We have heard the accounts of the enlightenment of the Buddha. Perhaps we have read of the sudden satori of a Zen monk, or the ecstatic rapture of Saints or Sages. We could challenge ourselves to reach that summit, thinking that we, too then, will become fully enlightened. “Suddenly, we will be like so and so – a  Guru.” The age we live in is full of desires of achievement and golden parachutes. Often these things are just outside of our every day, “ordinary” experience. These stories can remain distant to us, even the examples of holy people can remain static or lifeless if we do not go deeper inside. The yoga practices can help us do that.

Maybe we have seen a particular asana that we want to accomplish or we have set a series of poses as an objective for our practice. Often we place particular importance on postures, especially when they are overly challenging to us. “I will be a good yogi or yogini when I have mastered this or that practice or this or that meditative state.” However, as the wise Tibetan Lama, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, once stated: “It would be foolish to begin with more advanced subjects before we are familiar with the starting point.”

So what could be the starting point on our path to enlightenment?

Where can we begin to lay a firm foundation? To find our footing and develop a working process toward being on the path, every day every moment, and not just on our mat. Using a mode of experiencing our world which cultivates what Patanjali describes in this verse as citta-prasādanam; Serenity of mind.  Only through loving-kindness or friendliness and compassion can we become an instrument. Only with loving-kindness and compassion, like the wings of a dove, can we fly free. Free, we become a transformer of energy, not only a receiver of energy. In this process, we find that our path can become extra-ordinary and mutually beneficial to the Earth.

How can we learn to connect to ourselves, and how do we relate to others? How can we begin to purify our relationships? The first step, according to the Tibetan teachings of the Lam Rim (tr. stages of the path) is to generate Bodhicitta, meaning the awakened mind.. (The groundwork of the Lam Rim came from a careful application of the Lord Buddha’s teachings, many of which had long since vanished by that time in the 11th century, some 1600 years after his death) This Bodhicitta was to be the light on our perilous spiritual path.

Bodhicitta begins by merely reflecting on our relationships. Typically we might cherish ourselves and place extra importance and hold ourselves very dear indeed. We may reflect that we don’t always feel that way about others at all. We need to understand this imbalance and distinction to be able to begin to flip it around.

If we learn to replace ourselves with others in this picture, we can start to see our similarities and with time we can purify our relationships. Do we truly feel happy for those who are happy? Do we feel delighted for the virtuous, indifferent to the wicked? Generating Bodhicitta was seen as the swiftest means to Samadhi or Samatwam – equanimity. Only with Bodhicitta would we be able to see others as we see ourselves, becoming a beacon in the darkness for them. We would know what they needed in times of sorrow and in times of fear, and we would be able to cultivate an intimate knowledge and a deep heart-to-heart connection with all.

Bodhicitta teaches us that one of the most significant obstacles to our liberation is the survival instinct that often place our own interests before those of others. This self-cherishing action called Atma-Sneha is similar to the second obstacle (Klesha) that Patanjali talks about in Yoga Sutra 2.3: Asmita, which translates literally to “I-ness.” The false narrative that places “me” as more important  than others.

This pervasive illusion of self-importance stems from ignorance of “who we really are.” Once we begin to purify our relationships, we start to remember that who we are is interwoven with the warp and woof of the universe herself. As Alan Watts once said, ” When we realize this, we become full of energy.”

No one wants even the slightest bit of suffering. If we reflect carefully on our actions, we might see that when we ‘give’ happiness to others, it has the potential to lead us to our highest fulfillment. May the happiness of others be our joy, and may the sorrow of others be our sorrow. Giving joy to others and taking sadness away allows loving-kindness and compassion to arise and emerge spontaneously from our hearts.

Another way to explain Bodhicitta would be to call it the way of the Jivanmukta – that we strive to be the one who achieves liberation in this life. May we continue on this beautiful path by and for the mutual benefit of Earth and all her creatures.

▲▼ WHAT IS A JIVAMUKTI IMMERSION?

A Jivamukti Yoga Immersion takes the student deeper into the study of Jivamukti Yoga and its five tenets: Ahimsa, Scripture, Meditation, Nada and Bhakti, as well as Asana. Jivamukti's passionate focus on the original meaning of the Sanskrit word "asana"—as seat, connection, relationship to the earth—is as practical as it is radical during this time of global crisis and consciousness shift. The Immersion is perfect for those wishing to delve into the practical and mystical practices of Jivamukti Yoga. A Jivamukti Immersion provides great opportunities to make breakthroughs in asana practice, detox your body/heart/mind, and more deeply integrate your individual self with the greater reality. Because of the world-wide popularity of Jivamukti Yoga, Immersions attract students from all over the world, enabling you to meet new friends from many diverse places, building stronger yoga communities locally and globally.

▲▼ WHO CAN/ SHOULD ATTEND A JIVAMUKTI YOGA IMMERSION?

  • Anyone who is interested in the Jivamukti Yoga method (brand new students welcome)
  • Anyone who already practices the method and seeks a residential immersion experience

  • Anyone who wants to meet other yogis and yoginis from many parts of the globe
  • Alumni from previous Jivamukti Teacher Trainings who want to experience a reunion with other teachers
  • Yoga teachers from other disciplines and styles who wish to expand their experiential knowledge of other forms of yoga and gain continuing education credits
What are the benefits of a Jivamukti Immersion™ to someone who is already a yoga teacher?

  • Learn how to become a more effective communicator
  • Re-invigorate and re-energize an asana/meditation practice

Note to certified Jivamukti Teachers: Time spent in an Immersion will count as credit hours toward 800-hour certification in Jivamukti Yoga Sessions in the Immersion will go toward the 800-hour certification requirements of Jivamukti Yoga class attendance, Jivamukti Yoga workshops/retreats attendance, satsang attendance, Sanskrit and scriptural study, and meditation.

▲▼ WHAT PROGRAM CAN YOU EXPECT?

The Jivamuti Immersion program draws directly from the Jivamukti Teacher Training Program, the "Gold Standard of teacher trainings" (Time Out, NYC), which means that the facilitators of this Jivamukti Yoga Immersion will teach parts from the Teacher Training schedule in its most up-to date version but in a more relaxed and less formal way that leaves more room to dive deep into the teachings, enjox and relax. For the Berlin Immersions, we always compile a quite special and rather intensive program which usually is one of the most extensive and comprehensive programs of the year. In addition to intensive asana classes and workshops, you will benefit from asana and teaching skills practicals, lectures on yoga philosophy and theory, meditations, statsang and kirtan. The 2020 Berlin Immersion will provide you with invaluable tools that help you on the yogic path as a yoga student as well as  a (current or future) yoga teacher (Jivamukti Yoga or other tradition alike).

▲▼ GENERAL INFO ON THE YOGA PROGRAM & OTHER ACTIVITIES

THE THEME: As the Summer Solstice, in 2020 taking place right on the start of our retreat on June 20/21, marks the pinnacle of the sun and the height of the year, symbolically it represents the fullness of life and light. Yoga is a celebration of the Sun, the supreme consciousness that illuminates all things and makes them clear. We will deepen our practice by honoring the light and connecting to the powerful energy of the time. The same solar energy that brings seeds forth, can ripen our highest intentions into manifestation. In this celebration of life-giving fire and light, our goal is to give participants the opportunity to burn off any burdens, immerse themselves in the dynamic vastness of nature, to eat vibrant and nourishing food, and to enjoy the company of uplifting community with our Jivamukti Yoga community.

THE PROGRAM: Anja will lead a 3-hour morning asana practice, preceded by optional morning meditation, chanting, and scripture reading. These will be intensive “workshop style” classes focused around the theme of warmth, light, and abundance. We start this retreat off right away with the summer solstice and will be able to make use of its special energy throughout the entire week. Anja will infuse her many years of experience from teaching international Jivamukti Yoga retreats and Jivamukti Teacher Trainings to offer a distilled vision of the practice and its purpose. You will experience and explore different aspects of Jivamukti Yoga like asanas, kriyas, pranayama, and yogic scriptures. Each afternoon we will offer shorter asana sessions, led by one of our members of the Jivamukti Berlin teaching faculty. There is abundant free time in the afternoons and evenings to relax and adventure as you see fit.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE LOCATION

THE LOCATION: Cloistered away upon a lonely hill in southeast Sicily between the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ragusa Ibla and the popular summer beach destination of Marina di Ragusa , our historic 17th century Sicilian Masseria is an oasis with lush gardens, vast patios, beautifully restored rooms, and a grand swimming pool. The entire complex is enclosed by restored ancient stone walls, featuring within them the central courtyard, the ancient villa, and surrounding suites. Situated only 10 minutes away from the Mediterranean Sea and close to a small town for shopping and exploring, the Villa is surrounded by a serene natural park with centuries-old olive, carob and almond trees, embodying the quintessential Sicilian countryside with all its historical hand cut stone masonry, pre-Christian caves, breathtaking views and hills leading to sandy beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. During the peak of the year, experience coming to full flourishing with the Scilian hills as they abound with green and vibrance.

Our Masseria grounds and a brief history of the ancient Sicilian knowledge of mathematics and astronomy

The 17th century villa that we will be exclusively having as our retreat headquarters was designed to align with the sun, featuring the summer solstice sunrise at an approximate azimuth of 54 degrees and sunset at approximate azimuth of 305 degrees. The front of the house features a round holed stone window paired with an identical feature in the back of the house. These were constructed in such a mathematically precise fashion as to capture the intense sun on the solstice. The villa was built around these markers, and means that the sun will perfectly intersect and be directly over the grounds during the solstice. We should not consider these holed stones as a precise calendars or an instruments to observe the sun’s cycle, but rather monuments that provided information on the solstices for practical and agricultural purposes. The summer solstice is often considered to be a celebration of Apollo and the upcoming harvest. Thus it is a time of light, fullness, power, and abundance.

It is fascinating to discover how our ancestors already thousands of years ago, were able to apply precise astronomical canons to their constructions and living quarters. They would plan the axis of their living quarters at the moment of the laying of the foundation. They would divide the arch of the daily itinerary of the sun through projecting on the ground the shade of the sun itself on a fixed pole in the style of the ancient meridian clocks. In Sicily, the sun was an object of veneration and people felt always in a position of inferiority to the Sun and all its related and inexplicable events. At the center of their lives was the Sun, the Morning star that dictated the rhythm of nature and conditioned their everyday life. It was certainly a reason of great anxiety for Sicilian people at the start of winter to see the Sun getting lower and lower on the horizon while the daylight would diminish and the dark night extend its duration. At one point the Sun seemed to fall into darkness and the fear that it might not come back was always a tragic experience that seemed to threaten life itself. With time, Sicilians noticed that on the occasion of the winter solstice the Sun would always regain its strength as an invisible force over darkness which they celebrated with rituals starting fires symbolizing their effort to give heat and light to the weakened Sun. The celebration of the returning sun continued until it reaches its pinnacle in June, where fires are burnt and the fullness of the cycle is embraced. To understand the level of mathematical and existential knowledge in the old days we need simply to look into the life and writings of some of the Sicilian people of the time. Especially to Pythagoras who founded a school on Sicily, in which initiates were sworn to secrecy and lived a communal, ascetic lifestyle. This lifestyle entailed a number of dietary prohibitions, traditionally said to have included vegetarianism, although modern scholars doubt that he ever advocated for complete vegetarianism.

The teaching most securely identified with Pythagoras is metempsychosis, or the "transmigration of souls", which holds that every soul is immortal and, upon death, enters into a new body. He may have also devised the doctrine of musica universalis, which holds that the planets move according to mathematical equations and thus resonate to produce an inaudible symphony of music. Pythagoras was credited with many mathematical and scientific discoveries, including the Pythagorean theorem, Pythagorean tuning, the five regular solids, the Theory of Proportions, the sphericity of the Earth, and the identity of the morning and evening stars as the planet Venus. In addition, to the astronomical markings, the Masseria features its own small cave cemetery or necropolis located to the west of the Villa itself in the Egyptian tradition of building cemetery and pyramids west of the village / living quarters. This cave is visible on the immediate north side of the hill halfway along the main driveway and it is aligned with the winter solstice sunrise.

Luminous Shabda Retreat

▲▼ CARBON (CO2) OFFSET – WE WILL HAVE 3 TREES PLANTED FOR YOU

As of 2020, your Sicily Summer Solstice retreat tuition already includes a carbon offset for the estimated CO2 produced by the retreat partic- ipants travelling to Sicily and back. For each 2020 Sicily Summer Solstice Retreat participant, JYB will have 3 trees planted. A tree absorbs approx. 11.7lbs of CO2 every year, or approx. 468lbs. of CO2 over 40 years, so 3 trees for each participant will absorb roughly 1,404lbs. of CO2 over this time, which is about the same amount of CO2 from a round- trip flight from Berlin to Sicily. We know this is a lot of CO2 and we commit to CO2 reduction whenever possible. As of 2020, we will try at the very least to offset the CO2-related travel costs of our non-local retreats through having trees planted. In no way do we want to white-wash the impact on the climate that our Jivamukti Yoga retreats have, and we are committed to offering more local yoga retreats going forward. It is not an exaggeration to say that Jivamukti Yoga has made countless yoga students worldwide aware of the benefits of a vegetarian and better vegan diet for the planet as a whole as well as for their individual yoga practice and their general well-being. Converting to a vegan diet has prominently been named by The University of Oxford, among others, “as the single biggest way to reduce your envi- ronmental impact on earth”, “reducing an individual’s carbon footprint from food by up to 73%”.

▲▼ MORE INFORMATION ON THE RETREAT LOCATION AND ACCOMMODATION

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

Tucked away in a remote corner of Rügen, amongst cornfields, paddocks, arrays of bird nests, and bays of the Baltic, at the end of a tiny road, there is small village with a great historic granary, constructed in 1904.

Today the granary has been sensibly restored, keeping most of the details from the old design and thus retaining a generous and enchanting air with bright loft-like spaces that are perfect for practice and relaxation. Just the right space for those who seek to breathe deeply again.

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

In addition to the cozy rooms, there are numerous lounges and fireplaces all over the building for hanging out and having interesting conversations as well as quiet alcoves to read a book. In the evenings we can warm ourselves in front of the fireplaces or in the sauna and can also enjoy the view from the big wooden terraces over the virtually untouched nature around us.

Generous 1.000 sqm over two stories, a 150+ sqm loft for yoga classes, huge open style kitchen, saunas and fireplaces, huge terraces: Our 1904 granary which we have exclusively for our groups just embodies freedom, luxury, and coziness. A perfect venue to retreat, detox and immerse into the teachings of Jivamukti Yoga.

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

The nearby bird colony and beaches allow for spectacular walks and swims under the big skies of Germany's north. The short walk to the beach alone allows one to dive back into nature. In the evenings, there are a number of places to take it easy: in the sauna, around the fireplaces, or on the many terraces the site has to offer.

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

The ideal setting in order to have some fun and relaxing time out in the nature and by the sea in between yoga classes.

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

Rügen is known for Baltic beaches that span as far as the eye can see, unspoiled natural surroundings, and luxurious seaside resorts. A dream – in the middle of the Baltic. No wonder it has been one of the most popular holiday destinations in northern Germany ever since its discovery by Thomas Mann and Bismarck. Luckily, our canter is nicely guarded away from seasonal tourists and in the middle of the wild, allowing us to truly retreat and focus on our yoga practice. But this does not mean that you can't explore the many tourist destinations of the island while here!

▲▼ WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS TRAINING

Introduction: This 75hour Jivamukti Yoga teacher training, developed by the Jivamukti Global community, is held at Jivamukti Yoga Berlin on the following dates in 2019, which this booking form is for:

Language: English (Anja also speaks German, so individual tips/hints in German will be possible but comprehension of English will be necessary to successfully attend this training)

Unlimited Classes: At Jivamukti Yoga Berlin, you will also receive Unlimited free classes for the duration of your training (from Oct. 11 until Nov. 11, 2019) that is already included in the tuition, as we strongly encourage participants to practice as many additional Jivamukti Yoga classes as possible alongside the training.

Curriculum: The curriculum of this training presents 5 units, each unit is 15 hours. Thus, you will, upon successful participation, receive a certificate* of attendance for 75 hours of training in the Jivamukti Yoga method. (*please see separate detailed section below on the types of certification that can be achieved through this training).
The Jivamukti Yoga 75 hour training is aimed to provide you with a blueprint for incorporating the physical, psychological, spiritual and mystical aspects of yoga into modern life, without losing sight of the universal goal of the practice: liberation. Jivamukti Yoga’s focus on a non-dualistic view of life (the interconnectedness of all) awakens in the practitioner not only the need to protect the environment and all the animals and plants that share the planet with us, but also teaches skills to confidently achieve those goals for oneself as well as lead others to live in harmony with the planet.

Each day of the training consists of 5.5 hours of teacher training at the studio, a lunch break plus 2 hours of home-work that you need to work on by yourself.
You will receive a training manual with an overview and summary of the curriculum content and with your home-work assignments.
Every day of the training begins with a short meditation and an exploration into a topic of yoga philosophy and a mantra that is quintessential to the Jivamukti Yoga method. There is a daily practice of the Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class, followed by a practical and/or a lecture. The focus of this training will be on teaching you how to teach and on the methodology. This way, upon successful completion of this training, our aim is for you to be able to teach a Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class by yourself.
As part of the curriculum of the 75 hour Jivamukti Teacher Training, our goal is for you to learn:

  • how to teach the exact sequence of the Jivamukti Yoga Spiritual Warrior class
  • how to teach the Jivamukti Magic 10 as developed by Sharon Gannon
  • how to apply and teach according to the art of Vinyasa Krama
  • how to give safe assists for the asanas within the Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class
  • the foundations of the five tenets of Jivamukti Yoga (Ahimsa, Bhakti, Shastra, Nada, Dhyana)
  • the meaning of three Sanskrit Mantras, that are quintessential to the Jivamukti Yoga method, and how to chant them
  • what asana practice has to do with the relationship to ourselves, and to the world around us
  • how to properly receive and give feedback from/to others

▲▼ WHAT CERTIFICATION CAN BE OBTAINED THROUGH THIS TRAINING

Certificiate of Completion: After successful and complete attendance of all parts of this training, you will be issued a Certificate of Completion certifying that you took 75hours of foundational training in the Jivamukti Yoga method, namely how to teach the Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class.

Please note: This certificate of completion alone does NOT authorize you to teach Jivamukti Yoga Spiritual Warrior classes nor does taking this 75hr foundational training alone authorize you to teach any other Jivamukti Yoga class nor to use the brand name Jivamukti Yoga for any of your other yoga classes or similar yoga teaching services. These limitations will be stated in fine print on your certificate.

Teaching a test class in order to receive authorization to teach Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior classes: If you want to receive authorization to teach a Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class without taking the full 300hour Jivamukti Teacher Training, it is suggested that, after completion of our 75hr training, you first teach a number of classes, free of charge, in your community or to your friends/family, in order to enable you to confidently teach a test class at a Jivamukti Yoga School of your choice in front of the Director of the school, a 75hour Jivamukti Teacher Training Facilitator and/or the school’s JTAP Program director. For this test class, which has to be passed within one year of the completion of your 75hr training, you need to pay an additional examination fee, which at JYB is corresponding to the 95min private class fee of the examiner and includes taking your test class for 60 minutes and giving you feedback for 30 minutes. If you pass this test class, you will be issued another written certificate that will say: “You are now authorized to teach a Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior Class”. If you do not pass, the test class, you may repeat it for an unlimited number of times within one year (subject to the examination fee being paid for each test class).

Please note: This certificate will also state, in fine print: “You cannot call yourself a Jivamukti Yoga Teacher until you attend a 300 HR TT program, nor may you teach any other Jivamukti Yoga classes or use the brand name Jivamukti Yoga for any of your other yoga classes or similar yoga teaching services.”.

Taking the 300 HR Jivamukti Teacher Training: Alternatively, you may also take the full 300 HR Jivamukti Teacher Training at a later point which authorizes you to teach any Jivamukti Yoga class, including the Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class, without passing a test class. And the best thing is that the fees you paid for your 75HR training will be offset against your 300HR tuition as follows:
Sign up to 300hr JYTT within one year after 75hour TT completion: 100% of JY75 tuition paid
Sign up to 300hr JYTT within two years after 75hour TT completion: 50% of JY75 tuition paid
Sign up to 300hr JYTT more than 2 years after 75hour TT completion: 0% of JY75 tuition paid

▲▼ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I MISS PARTS OF THE TRAINING

For all classes/sessions/parts of this course it is crucial that you arrive on time. There will be no (partial or full) refund of the course fee if you miss any classes of the course. Please note that participation will be monitored, and a certificate of completion will only be issued if you take part in the full 75 hours of this course. The main requirement for successfully completing the training and receiving the certificate is that you need to “show up” and “be present” and engaged at all sessions, complete all homework, learn the sequence, and participate in the final review. It is up to the discretion of JYB and the facilitator of the 75 Hour training to grant a reasonable extension for a student to complete any work or to deny giving a student a certificate for stating the reason(s) in writing. However, in case of missed classes, sessions, regardless of the reason for missing them, the certificate will only be issued if they have been completed, which will involve an additional fee to compensate the facilitator for taking the time to re-teach the missed parts of the program just for you. This fee will be the pro-rated undiscounted training price in case you re-take the missed parts of the training in a following training. In case you ask the facilitator to teach the missed parts outside of another training just for you, this price will be multiplied by the factor of 9. I.e. if you need to re-take 2 hours of the training, you would have to pay 1.539 EUR / 75 * 2 * 9 = 369.36 EUR to the facilitator.

David EssingDavid Essing (Assistant)

During my training as a stage dancer, I came in contact with yoga for the first time and was fascinated by the inner strength and calm that I experienced through practice. For about 10 years I sporadically went to yoga classes, mostly when I was mentally or physically not so well. While working as a performer in London, I discovered Jivamukti Yoga. It was the first style that got me on the mat every day and made me develop a steady practice. In 2015 I completed the 300h Teacher Training and started the 800h Jivamukti Teacher Apprentice Program (JTAP) under the supervision of my mentor Anja Kühnel at Jivamukti Berlin. Meanwhile I decided to end my dance career and started studying Osteopathy in 2017. Since October 2018 I am an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher and more recently a mentor in the JTAP program.

Luminous Shabda Retreat

"MEET THE INNOVATORS...SHARON GANNON AND DAVID LIFE" (Yoga Journal, USA)
Jivamukti Yoga founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life, is one of the fastest growing and most highly regarded modern approaches to the ancient art of yoga. Sharon Gannon together with David Life have certified hundreds of students to teach the Jivamukti method through the intense one month residential 300 hour Teacher Training course which is offered each year in the US, Costa Rica and/or Europe/India. With their Yoga DVDs and the books "Jivamukti Yoga" (also translated into German, Russian & Italian), "The Art of Yoga", "Yoga and Vegetarianism", "Cats and Dogs are People, too!", "Simple Recipes for Joy", Sharon and David are changing the way that people view spirituality, life, themselves, each other, animals and the environment.

Sharon Gannon David LifeSHARON GANNON started her quest for liberation upon her birth on July 4th in Washington, DC. Sharon views art as a means for uplifting the soul and her artistic pursuits enriched the community by educating and inspiring. In 1984 she shifted her main focus from the performing arts to teaching yoga in the hope of giving practical methods that would benefit people more directly and immediately. Sharon has studied yoga since 1976 with many teachers around the globe, most notably with Shri Brahmananda Saraswati, Swami Nirmalanada, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, Swami Shankarananda, Shyam Das and Bhagavan Das. She brings a rare blend of scholarly study, artistic pursuits and a highly disciplined asana and meditation practice to her offerings as a teacher.

DAVID LIFE: Bios are hard for me to digest. The idea that a picture could be painted of me with some little list of factoids is untenable. The only thing that gives me credibility as a yoga teacher is the graceful association with my teachers. Sometimes I like to read bios because it tells me things about a person that I didn't know and to that end, here is a list of all the significant jobs that have come my way over the past 60 years, in order: Lawnmowing and snowshoveling, Paper delivery, Beer and Wine store stockboy, Forklift driver in Corrugated box company, Phone order taker, Dishwasher, Cafeteria manager, Welder in Steel MIll, Apartment building super, Silk screen production and designer, Graphic designer, Illustrator, Artist, Poet, Life Cafe owner, Yoga teacher, Bio writer!

Anja KühnelANJA KÜHNEL has been a devoted student of Sharon Gannon and David Life since she first met them while temporarily living in New York. She has been directing the two Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Centers and their Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training program since 2008. After 15 years of study with Sharon and David, Anja is more than grateful for all she has learned and all that she is still going to learn. Anja has been practicing yoga with teachers of various yoga styles and has traveled the world to do so. But in her heart, Anja knew immediately after her first Jivamukti class, that it was where she belonged. She teaches at her two Berlin Jivamukti Yoga Centers, is regularly invited as a guest teacher worldwide and leads the 800-hour Jivamukti Apprenticeship Teacher Training Program in Berlin. She has also been a regularly invited to mentor and teach at the international Jivamukti Teacher Trainings. In November 2020 she will again co-faclitate the German Jivamukti Teacher Training together with Yogeswari.

Everyone is talking about Sharon & David's Jivamukti Yoga method….
“Sharon Gannon und David Life who founded their own yoga method called Jivamukti Yoga in the late 80ies and, with it, made Yoga for the first time ever socially acceptable for western urban dwellers. Among their students are Sting, Madonna, Christy Turlington and basically all other non-overweight famous american actors and musicians. Many speak about them as Gurus. With their mixture of old Indian tradition and modern lifestyle like rock music they were the ones who were majorly responsible for the Yoga boom, which from New York has long spilled over to Germany: Three million Germans are said to regularly practice Yoga these days ... in Berlin-Mitte it appear to be two million alone.'
--Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Germany
"David Life looks like Iggy Pop, is widely tatooed, has an incredible power in his stringy tiny arms and the great luck to have a woman on his side who has a delphine blue streak in her black hair and who is radiating a mild wisdom that makes one want to start crying immediately as soon as she opens her mouth. With their headsets, the two contrive to get every hall to boil.... – Oh My Guru!"
--DIE WELT, Germany
“..holistic vision extending to strict vegetarianism and hard-core animal rights activism'
--Vanity Fair USA
“David and Sharon have inspired and encouraged us to think of yoga not just as a system of exercises but also as a door to the infinite.”
--Sting
"It has the full package, more than just exercise. I always learn something at Jivamukti; they really educate the students."
-- Christy Turlington
“Without Sharon and David, yoga in the US would still be the obscure practice of a few devotees.”
--The New York Times, USA
“The pioneers of yoga in the United States, inspire us to appreciate life’s depth and breadth.”

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE RETREAT LOCATION AND ACCOMODATION

Wild Woodstock Retreat

OUR LOCATION FOR THE YOGA CLASSES AND EVENTS:
Jivamukti Yoga co-founders Sharon Gannon and David Life open part of their home in Woodstock, NY (USA) for this special retreat. Here they have established the magical Wild Woodstock Forest Sanctuary which also holds a beautiful intimate yoga shala right next to their house where all yoga classes and events of this retreat will be held.

The Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary is a magical 125-acre sanctuary established in 2003 and located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains near Woodstock in upstate New York (about 2 hours north of New York City and 3.5 miles from downtown Woodstock).

The Sanctuary serves as a safe haven and unpolluted habitat for diverse plant and animal communities, including white tail deer, black bear, foxes, porcupines, possums, raccoons, turkeys, as well as a large variety of wild birds, fish, snakes and other reptiles and amphibians. In present culture, the word wild is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized," but the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others." The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness—to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully.

Sharon Gannon often teaches that we can have anything we want so long as we are willing to provide it to others first. She and David Life live that teaching by having established and by maintaining the Wild Woodstock Jivamukti Forest Sanctuary, which is the country ashram for the Jivamukti Yoga School.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

YOUR ACCOMMODATION DURING THIS RETREAT will be provided in handpicked high quality properties/houses in the Woodstock area. All houses are shared (2 to 5 twin/double or single rooms in one property), i.e. you will share a common living area, a fully equipped self-catered kitchen and 1 to 3 bathrooms with up to 4-10 other retreat participants (depending on the size of the house, number of single rooms booked etc.). All properties and rooms are individual with their special treats so it is hard to compare them. We also offer a number of optional upgrades to the standard accommodation to better suit your individual requirements. Check registration form for details.

Wild Woodstock Retreat

BOARD DURING THIS RETREAT: All houses come with well equipment self-catered kitchens and are strictly vegan, i.e. no diary, egg or meat products may be brought into any of the houses.  The idea of this retreat is to also create a Satsang experience by cooking together delicious vegan meals in groups of likeminded vegan yogis. All houses will be equipped with a copy of Sharon Gannon’s cookbook “Simple Recipes for Joy”. For days/nights out, there are also some very nice vegan restaurants in Woodstock.

▲▼ GENERAL INFO ON THE YOGA PROGRAM & OTHER ACTIVITIES

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

BEING WILD, the underlying theme of this first of its kind retreat, in present culture, is usually used to mean "chaotic" or "disorganized". But the word actually means "living true to one's nature; not restrained, controlled or tamed by others". The quest for enlightenment is a quest for wildness - to return to the natural state in which we know ourselves as one with all that is and we live that truth fully. Reaching this state actually requires the oposite of "chaos" and "disorganization": A regular intensive yoga practice, not only asana wise but also by studying the other legs of yoga and having satsang with other like minded yogis and most importantly, your teachers.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

This is why we have designed this one of a kind Jivamukti Yoga Intensive Retreat in Woodstock in order to provide you the opportunity to immerse for up to two weeks in intensive dalily study and practice right from the source with the founders of the Jivamukti Yoga method. Every morning of this retreat, Sharon Gannon and/or David Life will teach a 4 hour intensive Jivamukt Yoga workshop from 10am to 2pm (ca. 3 hour asana practice and ca. 1 hour yoga philosophy teachings). These workshop style morning classes will be complemented by daily 2hour Jivamukti Yoga Open XL classes with Jivamukti Yoga Berlin director Anja Kuehnel and occassionally also other international Jivamukti Yoga teachers in the late afternoon and, occasionally Satsangs, Kirtans and other special events with Sharon Gannon, David Life, Anja Kuehnel and other presenters.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Special Bonus Events: Approximately 1-2 times per week, we hope to offer special events in the late afternoon/evening, such as Satsangs or Kirtans or Yoga Philosophy lectures with Sharon Gannon, David Life and other presenters, which in some cases due to time constraints will be offered INSTEAD of the afternoon Open XL class (i.e. sometimes no Open XL class on special events days). Once during each of the two weeks of this retreat, we invite you to a Karma Yoga session to benefit the Wild Woodstock Forrest Sanctuary area. Exact daily schedule TBA at the retreat venue.

Sharon Gannon David Life Woodstock Retreat

Please note for your planning: On the arrival days there is NO morning class nor Q&A conference with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life, i.e. the first class on your arrival day is the afternoon class with Anja. This also applies if your arrival day is August 20 even though Sharon and David teach on this day in the morning, as this class is only for the people who also booked Part I of the retreat. On August 19 and 27 (final days), there is no evening class with Anja, last class on August 19 and 27 is the morning workshop with Sharon Gannon and/or David Life from 10am-2pm. If you booked both weeks, August 19 in the evening and August 20 in the morning provides a welcome opportunity to take "a day off" and explore Woodstock and its surroundings. For instance, you could visit Ananda Ashram or the Farm Sanctuary. Or go swimming.

As normal with renowned teachers like Sharon Gannon and David Life, the practice space included in this retreat strictly is the size of one regularly sized yoga mat (ca. 0,65x1,8m) only. All practice spots are marked and mats must be placed within the markers. You should bring your own yoga mat as there are only a limited number of rental mats. The yoga room has blankets and straps for your use. It also has a limited number of blocks. If you anticipate using blocks, please bring your own, as we cannot guarantee to have enough for everyone.

Please also let me know by which means of transportation so we can give you the address of your house, in case you did not book a shuttle pickup service from the bus station.

This year, we are again planning to do a little bit of Karma Yoga in the Wild Woodstock Forest in order to give back to nature. Message from Anja

अोम् ।। सह नाववतु । सह नौ भुनक्तु
सह वीर्यं करवावहै ।
तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु । मा विद्विषावहै ।।
अों शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ।।

Accept us both together, protect us both together, may our knowledge and strength increase together, may we not resent each other.

Dear ones,

I am thanking all of you for making an effort to create the time and space to be together! We hold precious and dear in our hearts whatever we put our energy into. It is 100% up to us. Life is pulling us in all these different directions. It is wonderful that we are all meeting here at Sharon ji's and David ji's beautiful home and at the sanctuary they have created for the animals, plants and us human people, and that all of us together get the chance to immerse into our practice in this beautiful natural environment which is supporting us on all levels. This year Wild Woodstock will be very special as we beginn on a New Moon and end on a Full Moon. And for me personally, it will the the 11th time in a row that I am coming to Wild Woodstock.

Let us put all of our love into what we do! Let us always remind each other that this is what truly matters in life. To uplift each other, to enjoy each other's company, to learn from each other, to see the beauty in each moment and to be grateful for the gift of life. Putting our prāṇa in what we truly care about: to be as natural and loving as one can possibly be, taking rest in our true nature, to truly be free and to serve with each breath.

लोका: समस्ता: सुखिनो भवन्तु ।।
May all beings everywhere be happy and free and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

Love.
Anja

▲▼ CARBON (CO2) OFFSET – WE WILL HAVE 20 TREES PLANTED FOR YOU

Planting treesAs of 2020, your Wild Woodstock retreat tuition already includes a carbon offset for the estimated CO2 produced by the retreat participants travelling to Woodstock and back. For each Wild Woodstock 2020 participant, JYB will have 20 trees planted. A tree absorbs approx. 11.7lbs of CO2 every year, or approx. 468lbs. of CO2 over 40 years, so 20 trees for each participant will absorb roughly 9,360lbs of CO2 over this time, which is about the same amount of CO2 from a round-trip flight from Europe to New York. However, the Wild Woodstock retreat is especially dear to us and to the world-wide Jivamukti Yoga Community as it allows Jivamukti Yoga teachers from all over the world to re-connect “back to the source” of their teachers, the co-founders of the Jivamukti Yoga method, enabling our worldwide Jivamukti teacher community to become even better communicators of the core principles of our method, being Ahimsa, social activism and ethical veganism. It is not an exaggeration to say that Jivamukti Yoga has made countless yoga students worldwide aware of the benefits of a vegetarian and better vegan diet for the planet as a whole as well as for their individual yoga practice and their general well-being. Converting to a vegan diet has prominently been named by The University of Oxford, among others, “as the single biggest way to reduce your environmental impact on earth”, “reducing an individual’s carbon footprint from food by up to 73%”. In addition to this, the proceeds from the Wild Woodstock Intensive Retreat help to maintain The Wild Woodstock Sanctuary by paying for its yearly property taxes which are quite high due to its sheer size. With its 125 acres of protected wild forest, the Wild Woodstock Forest sanctuary does not only give shelter to countless wild animals, like deer, bears, wild turkeys and many more, but it also absorbs more than 5 million lbs. of CO2 from the atmosphere every year (equivalent to 555 roundtrip flights from the US to Europe) while giving back 22,000lbs of O2 at the same time. In addition, all electricity used at the retreat is supplied by solar energy produced on the premises, saving approx. 4,000 lbs. of CO2 per year.

We suggest for first time visitors that you take the bus to Woodstock and call the taxi to bring you to the Sanctuary and not tell the bus driver to take you to Shady as you may get lost.

Properly understanding how to engage the bandhas not only bring lightness to the body but also stability and clarity to the mind. Learn to become more closely connected to this often elusive and mysterious part of the practice of Ashtanga yoga, appropriate for all levels.

14:00-16:30 Dynamic Transitions
Learn the dynamics of flight. In this class experience helpful techniques accessing the sometimes daunting part of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system, the jump-back and jump-through. Though challenging, need not be elusive to the practice, and believe it or not, the primary series prepares one to do so. Time will be taken to break down the parts and give useful tools to build inner strength and allow vinyasas to naturally become fluid and graceful. Building upon the jump through we will also experiment with jumping into and exiting out of various postures for added variety and adaptability.

Proper alignment, strength building as well as energizing the subtle body will be addressed in this inspiring and informative workshop for all levels.

14:15-16:15 Power Down: The Ashtanga Yoga Closing Sequence
The Ashtanga yoga closing sequence is comprised of a series of postures to cool, center and calm the body at the end of the practice. With various inverted postures and longer breath holds, gain greater understanding and awareness into this important sequence of postures.

▲▼ ABOUT LARUGA

Laruga Glaser

Laruga Glaser has been practicing Ashtanga yoga continuously for over 23 years. Starting in the beginning of her 20s, she was immediately drawn to the practice after working with other forms of yoga years prior. After establishing a committed practice she then deepened her studies traveling to Mysore, India annually to practice at KPJAYI where the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois taught and now his grandson, R. Sharath Jois teaches. Laruga has made more than 14 trips to Mysore and is on a mission to continue to learn and grow as a student as well as a teacher. She is one of the few in the world who have been given the distinction of being certified to teach up to Advanced B, which is not easily given and takes many years to earn. Through it all, Laruga teaches as an act of deep sharing and love for what yoga develops in each individual, facilitating space to open, challenge, and inspire those to realize their inherent potential, and has been personally invited all over the world to do so.

IN-CLASS PRIVATES (ICPs) AT JIVAMUKTI YOGA BERLINICP at JYB

An In-class Private (ICP) may be the best yoga class you’ve ever taken. During your regular group class, another teacher individually assists you throughout, refining and adding depth to your practice. In the hands of a certified Jivamukti teacher, you are comfortably guided through each and every movement of the class experience. Whether you are sitting, standing or moving through vinyasa, the teacher skillfully offers hands-on assists that take the recipient deeper into their practice. It is not just the physical form that benefits, as the subtle body is also energetically moved into alignment.Often psychological blockages prevent us from experiencing the inherent bliss of yoga. Sometimes, no matter how long we practice or how hard we try, we are unable to reach the next level. Through the guidance and trust created during an ICP, anxiety and fear diminish and self-confidence grows, allowing for major breakthroughs to occur. The ICP experience is unique to the Jivamukti Method and as therapeutic as a full body massage.

Students in groups will start with one trial lesson, and if they would like to continue, will commit to a 4-week curriculum that is optionally renewable.
